Family arrested in Sulaymaniyah for armed robbery, police say
SULAYMANIYAH — A family of three—a father, mother, and their daughter—was arrested in Sulaymaniyah following an armed robbery at a home in which they used a knife and issued threats of violence, police said. The arrests followed a legal complaint filed by a local resident and a subsequent investigation by authorities.
“The three suspects are from the same family—a man, a woman, and their daughter—who broke into a home, used a knife and threats, and managed to steal 30 million Iraqi dinars,” Sulaymaniyah Police spokesperson Sarkawt Ahmed told 964media. The incident occurred in the Kaziwa neighborhood.
Ahmed added, “The family members are Kurdish residents of the Kurdistan Region, and they had no prior connection with the victims, nor did they have any criminal record. However, they were identified through surveillance camera footage.” At the time of the robbery, only one person was present in the house, and the suspects forcibly took the money through threats and violence.
The suspects were apprehended while still in possession of a portion of the stolen money. “They are currently in police custody under a court order issued in accordance with Article 452 of the Iraqi Penal Code, and the investigation is ongoing,” Ahmed said.
Article 452 of the Iraqi Penal Code states that any person who uses threats to compel another individual to hand over money or other property is subject to a penalty of imprisonment for up to seven years. If force is used, the punishment may be increased to a term of up to 10 years.
