Tal Afar girls complete caricature drawing workshop to address social issues

TAL AFAR—A week-long training workshop on caricature drawing concluded on Friday in Tal Afar, Nineveh, with 26 local girls participating. The workshop, held at the Tal Afar Youth Forum, was designed to introduce participants to the basics of caricature art, focusing on creating artworks that address various social issues, including living conditions, bullying, social media, and declining educational standards.

“We organized this caricature drawing training, which is as important as other forms of art,” visual artist Abbas Ahmed told 964media. “A group of talented girls learned the essential elements needed in this type of drawing, particularly in terms of features and effects.”

Caricature art, known for its unique approach to discussing social, political, cultural, and artistic issues through humor, was the focus of both theoretical and practical lectures during the week.

Participant Huda Saeed shared her experience with enthusiasm: “I participated in the caricature drawing course and created several pieces focused on environmental conservation, water consumption, and cleanliness. I hope these events continue to be held periodically, and I encourage other girls to participate in these educational workshops.”

Ruaa Al-Afandi, the training supervisor, highlighted the educational goals of the workshop: “The participants learned the basics of caricature drawing, and we selected social issues to be addressed through humorous yet purposeful artwork,” she said.
