Al-Sudani, electoral commission chief discuss preparations for upcoming parliamentary elections

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Tuesday with Omar Ahmed Mohammed, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission, to review preparations for Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections and measures to ensure a “smooth” voting process, according to a statement from the prime minister’s media office.

Iraq’s next parliamentary elections are expected no later than Nov. 25, 2025, in accordance with constitutional timelines. The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council in January this year extended the term of IHEC’s Board of Commissioners for two years after their previous term expired on Jan. 7.

The IHEC begun updating the national voter register on Tuesday. The process will run for one month and is a key step in preparing for the country’s parliamentary elections.

Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today with the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), Mr. Omar Ahmed Mohammed.

The meeting discussed preparations for the national elections and the measures needed to ensure a smooth electoral process without any delays.

Discussions also covered the IHEC’s procedures for updating the voter registry and the continued registration of new voters to guarantee all citizens’ right to participate in the elections.
