Kut sees price hike for produce amid border closures for Arbaeen pilgrimage

WASIT — The markets in Kut, Wasit, have experienced a noticeable increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables, particularly essential items, following the closure of trade exchange points at border crossings. This closure, aligning with the Arbaeen pilgrimage processions, has escalated demand for these goods, with traders noting that price spikes are typical during this period due to the border shutdowns. They are calling for mechanisms to keep border crossings open during pilgrimage times to help stabilize prices.

Arbaeen, a major religious observance for Shia Muslims, commemorates the 40th day after Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in 680 AD at the Battle of Karbala. It draws millions of pilgrims, especially from Iraq, Iran, and other Shia-majority countries, who travel to Karbala, Iraq. During this time, border gates are primarily used for the movement of pilgrims.

“Prices of essential fruits and vegetables have risen over the past two days due to the closure of the border crossing and the increased demand from processions, as the governorate receives a large number of visitors, leading to a shortage of supplies,” Saad Al-Jassani, a vegetable trader, told 964media.

Al-Jassani further explained that the pressure on the only open crossing in Diyala governorate is causing delays of two to three days for trucks trying to pass, which has also driven up prices in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil.

“This is a normal situation that recurs annually and lasts for no more than two weeks. However, we still urge the responsible authorities to find a way to open trade exchange points during visits to control market prices and facilitate the processions and the pilgrimage,” Al-Jassani added.

In Kut’s market, the impact is evident in the soaring prices: cucumbers have increased from 650 IQD to 950 IQD per kilo; tomatoes from 650 IQD to 1250 IQD per kilo; potatoes from 500 IQD to 750 IQD per kilo; and bananas from 1500 IQD to 2000 IQD per kilo.
