Following 17 workers' death this year

Kurdistan Workers’ Syndicate launches safety training initiative

SULAYMANIYAH – The Sulaymaniyah branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Syndicate announced Sunday it will launch safety training sessions for workers in the governorate, aiming to reduce workplace accidents. The sessions will be organized in collaboration with companies where the workers are employed, with the syndicate coordinating directly to ensure proper execution.

Khabat Mirza, head of public relations for the Sulaymaniyah branch, told 964media that similar sessions have been held previously, with plans to continue these efforts.

“A delegation from our syndicate visited the Sulaymaniyah recycling plant and discussed implementing the training sessions with the company’s management,” Mirza said.

The training will soon commence at the recycling plant, with plans to extend it to other factories and work sites in Sulaymaniyah. Mirza also highlighted the mistreatment of workers by some employers and the reluctance of workers to raise concerns due to fear of job loss.
Mirza emphasized the need for government intervention to protect workers, citing the high number of workplace fatalities.

Since the beginning of the year, 17 workers in Sulaymaniyah, 9 in Erbil, and 8 in Garmiyan have died on the job, according to the Kurdistan Construction Workers’ Organization.

The organization attributed these deaths to inadequate safety standards, lack of protective equipment, and insufficient training, with common causes being electrocution, building collapses, falls, machinery accidents, and severe bleeding.

In 2023, the Kurdistan Workers’ Union reported 53 worker deaths, including 39 local workers and 14 foreign nationals, up from 41 deaths in 2022.
