Two dead, one injured in a fatal crash on Basra’s Abu Al-Khasib Road

BASRA – A traffic incident on Basra’s Abu Al-Khasib Road on early Thursday morning claimed the lives of two and left a third person critically injured. The injured individual was transferred to Al-Jumhuri Hospital in central Basra for treatment.

According to a security source speaking to 964media, the incident occurred due to an improper overtaking maneuver by the driver of a pickup truck on the narrow road, which has a single lane for each direction. The maneuver resulted in a collision with an oncoming Hyundai Elantra, causing the car to overturn on the roadside.

The crash led to the deaths of two people and left one person critically injured. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the forensic medicine department.

Traffic accidents remain a significant concern in Iraq. In 2023, the country, excluding the Kurdistan Region, recorded 11,552 traffic accidents, resulting in 3,019 fatalities and 12,314 injuries. This marked a slight increase from 2022, which saw 11,523 accidents and 3,021 deaths. Driver error accounted for approximately 79% of these incidents, with vehicle-related issues and poor road conditions contributing to the remainder.
