Book sales surge in Mosul with focus on upcoming international fair
MOSUL — Local bookstores, particularly in Mosul’s cultural heart, the Majmu’a Al-Thaqafiyah area, are bustling with activity as novels continue to lead sales. Among the most sought-after books this week is “The Fall of Mosul and the Project to Divide Iraq,” by Adawi Al-Sa’ib. Store owners are gearing up for the Nineveh Book Fair scheduled for Sept. 26, which will showcase a range of Arab publishers.
Abdul Moneim Al-Amir, owner of Mashki Publishing House, notes that intellectual and religious titles are consistently top sellers. The publishing house’s current bestsellers include “Introduction to Modern Literary Criticism” by Faisal Ghazi and “Principles of Analyzing Poetic, Narrative, and Dramatic Texts” by Muhammed Jasim.
Mashki’s latest releases feature “A Model for Planning and Building the Four Assyrian Capitals” by Muhammed Ujaj, which explores the defensive fortifications of the ancient city of Hatra, and “Semiotics of the Female Character” by Fadia Saad Jasim.
Hatra, a fortified city that flourished as a religious and trading center in the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, resisted Roman invasions effectively and was a crucial part of the Parthian Empire. It is known for its unique architecture that combines Hellenistic and Roman styles with Eastern elements.
“We specialize in providing books on Assyrian civilization, the Kingdom of Hatra, reading its inscriptions, urban planning of Assyrian cities, and studies on ancient Iraqi bridges and passages,” said Al-Amir.
Youssef Abdel Muttalib, owner of the Free Library, reported to 964media that reading activity has surged this week with the start of summer vacation, particularly among young adults.
