Iraq out of Paris Olympics with 3-0 loss to Morocco
NEWSROOM – The Iraqi Olympic football team’s journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics ended in an early exit with a 3-0 defeat by Morocco in their final group stage match on Tuesday at Allianz Riviera stadium.
Morocco took control early, scoring all three goals in the first 37 minutes. Amir Richardson initiated the scoring with a header in the 19th minute. Shortly after, Soufiane Rahimi expanded the lead with a goal in the 28th minute, and Abde Ezzalzouli capped the scoring with a 37th-minute goal.
Iraq, attempting to counter the relentless Moroccan assault, made strategic adjustments in the second half but failed to breach the Moroccan defense.
With this loss, Iraq has crashed out at the group stage. The team had started the tournament with a 2-1 victory against Ukraine but suffered a 3-1 loss to Argentina.
This year marks Iraq’s sixth Olympic appearance since their debut at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Their most significant success was at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where they reached the semifinals and finished fourth, narrowly missing a bronze medal in a match against Italy.
