Sulaymaniyah orders halt to work on residential project
SULAYMANIYAH — Construction at the Park 77 residential project in Sulaymaniyah has been halted following an incident that resulted in the death of a worker. The worker, identified as Goran Akram, fell last week from the 40th floor of the site under construction near the Sulaymaniyah Governorate offices.
Following the accident, the Sulaymaniyah General Directorate of Labor and Social Affairs conducted an inspection and issued a directive to the project manager, mandating a temporary suspension of all activities. The inspection report highlighted several deficiencies and violations that need “to be addressed within three days.””. The project will undergo a re-evaluation before work can continue.
The directorate has called on all workers to report any unsafe conditions by contacting a special hotline.
From the beginning of the year until April 28, the Kurdistan Construction Workers’ Organization reported 19 worker fatalities in the Kurdistan Region and an additional death in Kirkuk Governorate. These deaths were attributed to various causes, including electrocution, building collapses, falls from significant heights, and machinery-related incidents. The Kurdistan Workers’ Union recorded an increase in worker deaths, with 53 fatalities in 2023, compared to 41 in 2022.
