70 guests taken ill

Diyala restaurant shut down after food poisoning incident

DIYALA – The Diyala Health Directorate announced on Wednesday the closure of a restaurant and the arrest of its owner following the food poisoning of 70 people in Mansouriya district, northeast of Diyala.

Faris Al-Azzawi, spokesperson for Diyala Health Directorate, told 964media that an individual hosted a banquet to celebrate his son’s graduation, serving meals prepared by a local restaurant. The event resulted in 70 guests falling ill, all of whom were later hospitalized.

All individuals who were admitted to the hospital have stabilized and been discharged, Al-Azzawi said. For the first time, Diyala Health sent mobile medical teams to visit the homes of those affected, providing treatment late into the night.

The restaurant that supplied the food has been closed, and its owner detained. Samples of the food were taken and sent to the central laboratories of the Ministry of Health for testing.

“If the test results indicate negligence on the part of the restaurant, the case will be referred to the courts for appropriate legal action,” Al-Azzawi added, emphasizing that Diyala’s health authorities have intensified their inspections of markets and restaurants to ensure adherence to health and safety regulations.
