KRG Anti-Narcotics Directorate announces arrests in operation

NEWSROOM – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Anti-Narcotics Directorate, announced the arrest of four individuals suspected of involvement in the trade and transport of narcotic substances on Wednesday. The suspects were found in possession of 17 kilograms of crystal meth.

According to a statement from the directorate, which is part of the Kurdistan Region’s Asayish security forces, the investigation and arrest of these suspects took over a month and were conducted under judicial orders for security investigations.

From May 26, 2024, to July 3, 2024, the directorate’s teams conducted two operations that led to the arrest of the four individuals suspected of engaging in the transportation and trade of narcotic substances.

A source close to the directorate revealed to 964media that the operations to arrest these suspects took place within the jurisdictions of two different cities in the Kurdistan region. However, the specific names of the cities were not disclosed.

The source stated, “Currently, all four suspects are being held and investigated under the anti-drug trafficking law.”

In the Kurdistan Region last year, 3,353 individuals involved in the use and trade of narcotic substances were arrested. In the first five months of 2024, a total of 1,322 individuals have been arrested in the governorates of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. Of those arrested this year, 585 were in Sulaymaniyah, while the remaining 737 suspects were apprehended in Erbil and Duhok. Among the 737 arrested in Erbil and Duhok, 403 were specifically involved in buying and selling narcotic substances.
