Ten suspects arrested
Diwaniyah police dismantle drug trafficking network
DIWANIYAH – Diwaniyah police have dismantled a drug trafficking network, authorities said.
“The operation was executed based on confirmed intelligence and information gathered from private sources,” according to a Diwaniyah police statement. Ten individuals suspected to have been involved in the network were arrested.
Authorities confiscated crystal meth, drug paraphernalia, a hand grenade, a Kalashnikov rifle, and a handgun. The suspects are detained under Article 28 of the Anti-Narcotics Law, pending charges.
Iraqi law imposes severe penalties for drug trafficking, including death in extreme cases. The Central Criminal Court in Baghdad recently sentenced seven people, including a foreign national, to death for drug trafficking. The Babil Criminal Court also sentenced a dealer to life in prison for possessing and intending to sell crystal meth and other narcotics.
Last year, Iraqi authorities arrested 144 international traffickers, seizing four tons of narcotics, 15 tons of psychotropic substances, 1,700 firearms, and 1,200 vehicles.
