Nearly 200 cases of food poisoning reported in Harir during Eid Al-Adha

HARIR — Nearly 200 cases of food poisoning, primarily affecting children, were reported at Harir District’s public hospital in Erbil during the Eid Al-Adha holidays, a surge attributed to high temperatures and the consumption of spoiled food.

The hospital recorded a total of 197 cases over the holiday period, with the first day seeing the highest incidence, numbering 85 cases, according to hospital activity reports.

Lazgin Sabah, the hospital administrator, cited the main causes of the outbreak as the intense summer heat and improper handling of holiday foods. “Most of these cases were children, experiencing symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea,” Sabah told 964media.

He also noted an increased consumption of carbonated drinks among children as a contributing factor.

In a related incident, eight mountain climbers also suffered food poisoning, exacerbated by their consumption of food in high temperatures.

Overall, during the Eid Al-Adha period, the hospital treated 784 patients for various conditions including 12 traffic accidents, eight injuries from falls, two snake bites, 134 cases of vomiting and diarrhea, 19 injuries from physical altercations, and two cases of burns.
