Kurdistan Region fishing ban to end Thursday

NEWSROOM — A three-month fishing ban in the Kurdistan Region is set to end on Thursday, concluding a prohibition aimed at protecting fish populations during their critical breeding season.

Hemin Kamarkhan, spokesperson for the Sulaymaniyah Forest Police and Environment Police Directorate, confirmed to 964media that the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Kurdistan Region has marked June 20 as the closure of the current fishing ban.

“If there is any decision to extend the period, it will be announced. However, as of now, tomorrow marks the end of the fishing ban season,” Kamarkhan said.

Originally, the Ministry announced the ban for the period from March 5 to June 15, 2024, applicable to all areas within the region. The extension added five additional days to the initial end date.

The ban targets fishing practices that pose significant ecological risks, such as the use of electricity, poisons, explosives, and fine-mesh nets. These methods, while effective, lead to the indiscriminate killing of various aquatic species and disrupt the breeding cycles vital for sustaining healthy fish populations.

Enforcement of the ban has led to several arrests of individuals engaging in illegal fishing activities throughout the waters of the Kurdistan Region.
