Turkish airstrikes hit Mount Qandil
QANDIL — Several airstrikes were carried out in the Kurdistan Region’s Mount Qandil on Tuesday. Local sources told 964media that multiple Turkish warplanes bombarded locations in the Qandil area.
Witnesses reported hearing two consecutive airstrikes. A source from the village of Indzay in Qandil told 964media, “Around 3:00 PM today, the Bare Qopan forest, opposite Indzay village in the Sangasar district, was bombed.”
The airstrikes are part of Turkey’s ongoing operations in the Kurdistan Region, under the pretext targeting fighters belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, known by its Kurdish acronym PKK.
The same source added that the Dirabiyan mountain area within the Warte sub-district was similarly targeted.
While the exact extent of the damage from these bombings is still unknown, it has been reported that fires have broken out in the forested areas near the village.
In total, Turkish forces have conducted 833 airstrikes northern Iraq from January through May 2024, according to Kamaran Mala Osman, the coordinator of the Community Peacemaker Teams-Iraqi Kurdistan.
Recently, Turkish airstrikes sparked a wildfire on a mountain in Sulaymaniyah’s Penjwen district, destroying over 25 acres of forest and grazing land.
