Commemorative project

Halabja City Gate construction to begin after Eid Al-Adha

HALABJA — The construction of the Halabja City Gate is set to commence following the conclusion of the Eid al-Adha holiday, with eight companies having submitted bids for the project.

Funding for the gate’s construction, totaling one billion dinars ($763,000), has been allocated by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani.

This initiative was initially proposed as a commemorative gesture to honor the victims of the chemical attacks.

On March 16, 1988, a chemical attack during the Anfal genocide against the Kurds by the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein’s regime resulted in over 5,000 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries.

Kawa Ali, Deputy Governor of Halabja, announced on his Facebook page that the tender committee has convened and received bids from eight companies.

“After Eid al-Adha, the evaluation committee will select the best tender, and the project will be awarded to a company to begin construction,” Ali stated.

The Halabja City Gate is expected to be completed within 200 days.

The gate’s design features an archway for pedestrians, surrounded by extensive greenery and multiple fountains.

Halabja, now officially recognized as a governorate by the Kurdistan Regional Government, is located near the Iran border, approximately 83 kilometers southeast of Sulaymaniyah.
