Franso Hariri Stadium in Erbil to be renovated

ERBIL — The Franso Hariri Stadium in Erbil is set to undergo significant renovations, including grass replacement, with a budget allocation of nearly two billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $1.35 million).

The Erbil Sports Club, on their official page, announced on Saturday night that “1,761,716,000 billion Iraqi dinars have been allocated for the renovation of the Franso Hariri Stadium.” This project is scheduled to begin immediately after the conclusion of this year’s Iraqi Stars League season.

Franso Hariri Stadium, named in honor of the assassinated Assyrian politician Franso Hariri in 2001, serves as the international home ground for the Erbil Sports Club. Built in 1956, concurrent with the founding of the club, it stands as the second-largest sports stadium in Iraq and was designated an international stadium in 2009.

This renovation initiative comes at a critical time following financial and administrative challenges faced by the club, including the resignation of the club’s management staff last month. Funds for the stadium renovation are from Erbil governorate coffers.

Currently, Erbil Sports Club is positioned 14th in the league, having accumulated 31 points from 29 matches. The upcoming renovations are part of broader efforts to revitalize the club and improve its facilities.
