Iraq lays foundation for railway link to Iran

BASRA, September 2 — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani laid the cornerstone on Saturday for a railway project connecting Iraq to Iran, facilitating the transport of passengers and religious pilgrims through the Shalamja border crossing.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s press office announced:

[The Prime Minister] laid the foundation stone for a railway project at the Shalamja border crossing in Basra governorate. This project aims to transport passengers and visitors to the holy shrines between the Republic of Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The event was attended by Iran’s Vice President, Mr. Mohammad Mokhber.
