Koya cemeteries reach full capacity amid illegal fences

KOYA — The cemeteries in Koya have reached full capacity, leaving no space for new burials. The situation is worsened by individuals who, after burying their deceased, have erected fences around the gravesites, with some graves enclosed by up to 150 meters of fencing.

Tariq Haider, the Koya district qaymaqam, told 964media, “We are coordinating with the police and religious endowments authorities and are aware of the issue. We will address it in the near future.”

He added, “Initially, we will post notices on the illegally constructed fences within the cemeteries, giving a week’s notice for their removal. If they are not dismantled, we will remove them with our machinery.”

Haider presses that cemeteries are not private property and cannot be appropriated or fenced off by individuals.

Koya has three cemeteries.
