Al-Mishkhab district celebrates “Majina” rituals

AL-MISHKHAB — In the rural town of Al-Mishkhab in the southern Najaf province, the Iqraa Primary School buzzes with excitement as students adorned in vividly colorful folk costumes gather on rugs, indulging in palm dates and aromatic coffee.

Against this picturesque backdrop, they immerse themselves in the enchanting tradition of “Majina” or “Garangao,” breathing new life into age-old rituals.

Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of drums, the children reenact scenes of traditional life, infusing the atmosphere with merriment.

The air then resonates with joyous melodies echoing through the school’s courtyard as young girls and boys chant the beloved folkloric refrain, “Majina Ya Majina,” which roughly translates to “Oh, the generous people of the neighborhood.”.

The Garangao, celebrated on the 15th night of Ramadan to honor the birth of Imam Hassan bin Ali, Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, holds deep cultural significance across southern Iraqi cities.

Known by various names like “Garangao” evoking the spirited drumming, and “Majina,” derived from the rhythmic Baghdadi chant for the occasion, this cherished tradition unites communities in joyous revelry.

Taghreed Fadhil, the school’s media officer, said the Iqraa Scgool recognizes the importance of honoring religious, national, and folk events in the fabric of Al-Mishkhab’s heritage.

“Today, we celebrate Majina (Garangao) to commemorate the initial joy that graced the household of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib with the birth of Imam Hassan. On this day, children annually venture out to collect gifts and sweets from neighbors, wearing special costumes crafted or purchased by their families,” she added.

In the heart of the school’s courtyard, the festivities unfold, drawing cheers and applause from parents and spectators alike.
