Duhok civil defense announces plans to reduce fires during Ramadan

DUHOK — In response to the elevated risk of fire incidents during Ramadan, the Duhok Civil Defense has initiated a preventive strategy, particularly targeting the city’s bustling market areas.

Effective immediately, two specialized teams, equipped with civil defense vehicles, will undertake continuous patrols across these markets to oversee and mitigate any emergent fire hazards.

Bewar Abdulaziz, spokesperson for the Duhok Civil Defense, shared with 964media his concerns regarding the disorganized state of Duhok’s markets. He highlighted the noncompliance of numerous establishments with civil defense protocols, particularly the absence of fire extinguishers on premises.

Abdulaziz reported that of the more than 1,200 locations and shops inspected, a significant majority failed to adhere to civil defense standards.

To bolster safety measures, the Duhok Civil Defense has decided to install fire extinguishers at intervals of every 100 meters throughout the markets. This step aims to enable guards and shopkeepers to promptly address any fire incidents.

Duhok witnessed 1,695 fire incidents in 2023, which led to six deaths due to burns and four due to smoke inhalation, alongside eight individuals sustaining burn injuries.
