Third attack in two days
Turkish airstrike targets area near Sargali village in Amedi district
AMEDI — Turkish warplanes bombed an area near the village of Sargali in Iraq’s Amedi district on Thursday, according to residents and local officials.
A video sent to 964media by villagers showed a loud explosion around noon, with doors and windows shaking in nearby homes. Residents reported that this was the third attack targeting areas near Sargali in the past two days. The village has over 40 households.
An Amedi district official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told 964media, “The Matin mountain range, which borders Amedi, frequently experiences Turkish airstrikes. However, today’s attack targeted an area less than half a kilometer from Sargali village.”
The official confirmed no casualties but added that local residents are living in fear. The source revealed that four villages near Sargali – Mzhe, Kevnemzhe, Spindar Khalfo, and Gergash – have been deserted this year due to the unstable security situation.
According to reports, 206 out of 358 villages in Amedi district have been abandoned due to concerns over bombings and overall insecurity.
Turkey regularly conducts airstrikes in areas of the Kurdistan Region, claiming the presence of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members. The Community Peacemaker Team, a U.S.-based organization monitoring such incidents, reported that military operations and airstrikes resulted in the death of 11 civilians and the injury of 13 others in 2023.
