Three days left for grace period

Kurdistan Region traffic fine discount, debt relief, near end

ERBIL—The Kurdistan Regional Government announced on its website Sunday that the amnesty period offering a 20% reduction on debts and an option to settle traffic penalties will end Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024.

Initiated on Aug. 28, 2023, the program was extended to the end of February 2024 to help citizens clear their debts and fines ahead of a change to how penalties are levied that was due to be introduced this month but has faced further delays. New procedures will enforce settlement of traffic penalties within 30 days of the infraction.

Hemn Hamed Amin, spokesperson for the Erbil Traffic Police, informed 964media that the majority of those who have benefited from this decision were drivers with substantial debts, some owing between five to six million Iraqi dinars, roughly equivalent to the value of their vehicles.
