Shalamjah border crossing

Rain causes price hikes for Iranian produce

BASRA — Prices at the Central Hamdan Market for fruits and vegetables saw a notable rise on Sunday morning, attributed to delays in truck arrivals from Iran. The disruptions, caused by heavy rainfall impacting the Shalamjah border crossing, led to price increases ranging from 50 to 150 Iraqi dinars per kilogram for imported goods.

Ali Al-Darraji, a manager at a vegetable sales office, discussed the issue’s recurring nature with 964media. “Whenever there’s rain, it hampers the trucks’ journey from Iranian farms to the Iraqi border, resulting in price hikes,” Al-Darraji stated. He added that prices also tend to surge on Fridays, the market holiday, due to a dip in daily supplies which, in turn, drives up prices.

Among the produce, tomatoes from the Zubair farms remain the most readily available, although they are not immune to the recent price increases.
