Crystal meth, marijuana
Erbil security arrests two for possession of three kilograms of narcotics
ERBIL — Erbil security forces arrested two people for possession of three kilograms of narcotics, authorities said Tuesday.
In a statement, the Erbil Security Directorate said the arrests followed an investigation coordinated with the General Directorate of Narcotics Control and carried out under judicial orders.
Officials stated that one of the suspects is from outside the Kurdistan Region. At the time of their arrest, authorities say were found with three kilograms of crystal meth and marijuana concealed inside their vehicle with the intention of smuggling it into Erbil.
This follows a Sunday announcement from Iraq’s interior ministry, which reported the seizure of more than a ton of captagon tablets smuggled from Syria via Turkey.
The operation is part of a series of actions against drug trafficking in the region. On March 4, authorities in Erbil announced a crackdown on narcotics trafficking, resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals and the seizure of more than 26 kilograms of drugs over the past two weeks.
On Feb. 13, Erbil Security Forces intercepted 1.5 kilograms of heroin smuggled into the Kurdistan Region via a commercial shipping company, where the drugs were concealed in nonstick frying pans and pots.
