Trade minister: Iraqi market 'prefers' Syrian goods

Iraq, Syria form technical committees to enhance bilateral trade

Baghdad — Iraqi Trade Minister Atheer Dawood Al-Ghurairy announced on Thursday the creation of technical committees between Iraq and Syria to focus on areas such as reconstruction, housing, social welfare, and the signing of memorandums of understanding, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations and increase trade volumes.

Al-Ghurairy, speaking to the Al-Sabah newspaper, highlighted the Iraqi market’s ‘preference’ for Syrian goods and industries, noting ongoing efforts to boost trade between the two nations. “The Iraqi-Syrian committee concluded its 12th session in Baghdad over the last two days, aimed at fostering balanced relations rooted in sustainable development and mutual benefits,” he said.

He further mentioned the formation of technical committees in health, higher education, and external trade, with the goal of restoring trade exchange to its historic levels, reflecting the stature of both countries.

“The Iraqi market has always favored Syrian goods and industries, which have traditionally held a significant place in our market,” Al-Ghurairy stated.
