Historic Kirkuk citadel maintains appeal amidst neglect

KIRKUK, August 20 — The historical Kirkuk Citadel continues to hold its place as one of the most captivating heritage sites in the city, yet it remains subjected to significant neglect that threatens its historical landmarks.

Salah Areebi – Historian and Social Researcher for Network 964:
“The Citadel was constructed in the second millennium BCE, which means it has been standing for 2500 years.”

“This archaeological landmark houses numerous historical artifacts, including the tomb of the Prophet Daniel, Ottoman tombs, Christian houses, and the Grand Mosque.”

Ahmed Saeed – Resident for Network 964:
“The Citadel suffers from severe neglect, despite the substantial interest from Arab and foreign tourists.”

“Turkish organizations have declared their willingness to rehabilitate it, but we have not witnessed any progress until today.”

“The Citadel experienced a resurgence during recent reconstruction campaigns in Kirkuk, and entry to it remains free.”
