Duhok to work on 24 archaeological sites in 2024 with EU support

DUHOK – The Duhok Antiquities Directorate has announced plans to commence work on 24 archaeological sites across the governorate in 2024, with the support of European Union organizations.

Bekas Brifkani, the Director of Duhok Antiquities, told 964media that the directorate aims to excavate 12 sites and fully restore another 12 in six districts within Duhok throughout the year. Key locations slated for restoration include the oldest neighborhoods of Duhok (Brayati), Garsen Cave, the Old Mosque of Amadiya, Kora Seji, the Bahdinan Gate, the Old Church in Amadiya, Kri Bastki, Kri Zed in the Semel district, Kri Komel in the Shekhan district, Zari Jiri town in Aqre, the Qishla, and the Ezekiel “Shush” Church, alongside most archaeological sites in the Aqre district.

While the specific budget for these 24 projects remains undisclosed, European Union organizations will cover the expenses related to excavation and restoration. Brifkani noted that the restoration of Garsen Cave is estimated to cost $731,000, and the restoration of Duhok’s oldest neighborhood, “Brayati,” which includes 100 residential units, is set to cost 30 million Iraqi dinars and has reached its final stage.
