Evergreen urban landscaping

Raperin environment directorate advocates for Eucalyptus trees in Kurdistan

RAPERIN — The Raperin Environment Directorate recently recommended planting Eucalyptus trees in Kurdistan, notably in gardens and along boulevards, to capitalize on the benefits of this Australian-native species.

Eucalyptus trees, known for their quick growth and potential to reach heights of 20 to 45 meters, are evergreen and valued for urban landscaping.

Mohammed Karim, the director of the Raperin Environment Directorate, spoke to 964media about the challenges Eucalyptus trees face from municipalities, park administrations, and residents. These groups frequently cut down the trees in residential areas or neglect those in parks and boulevards until they perish or are removed and replaced.

Karim pointed out, “Although Eucalyptus may not be ideal for indoor planting due to its rapid growth, it is highly beneficial for outdoor areas like gardens and boulevards. With regular pruning, these trees can be kept in excellent condition.”

He addressed misconceptions about Eucalyptus trees, such as the belief that their quick growth can damage walls and fences, leading to their removal. “However, when sited correctly in outdoor spaces, these trees don’t cause such problems,” he stated.

Karim stressed the importance of not removing trees indiscriminately, noting that each species brings unique benefits. He advocated for replacing trees that are removed or die with new saplings or different tree types to maintain the region’s greenery.
