Poles pose serious risks

Concerns over unstable electricity poles in Al-Jihad neighborhood, Baghdad

BAGHDAD — Residents of the Al-Jihad neighborhood in Baghdad say unstable electricity poles in the area pose a serious risk and are in danger of collapse. They have called on the Ministry of Electricity to send maintenance teams to secure the poles and fix hanging wires.

Local resident Ahmed Ali told 964media that community members had tried and failed to get a response from the electricity department for some time.

“What are they waiting for? Are they waiting for a disaster to happen here,” he questioned.

Another resident, Ahmed Al-Faraji, emphasized that the problem involves more than just one pole.

“There are several poles. We have been warning about this danger for a year, telling them to be careful, but to no avail,” he explained.

Al-Faraji pointed out that one of the unstable poles is ironically located opposite the local electricity department office.

A source from the electricity department told 964media that complaints are received periodically and that surveys  are conducted on all unstable poles to ensure their correct installation. The problem in Al-Jihad is expected to be resolved soon, according to the source.
