Sulaymaniyah top for apartments
Erbil leads in house construction among Kurdistan governorates
ERBIL – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Board of Investment reports that over the last 17 years, construction projects within the Kurdistan Region have shown a clear preference for houses in Erbil and apartments in Sulaymaniyah.
According to the board’s statistics, shared with 964media, the region has seen the construction of 213,824 residential units. Out of these, 111,755 were in Erbil, with 53,446 in Sulaymaniyah, and the remainder spread across Duhok and other autonomous administrations.
In Erbil, houses represent the bulk of construction efforts, with a total of 58,264 houses built. In contrast, Sulaymaniyah has experienced a significant number of apartment constructions, amounting to 31,565 units.
Pishtiwan Hama Saeed, general director at the board, told 964media, “The demand for and purchase of residential units closely reflect the cultural and lifestyle preferences of different areas in Kurdistan. The distinction between apartments and houses stems from these cultural dynamics.”
Hama Saeed further explained that in certain districts and sub-districts of the region, there is a reduced inclination towards building apartment complexes due to lifestyle and economic considerations, noting, “There’s a low demand, nobody buys, and the majority of projects are houses.”
