Anxious and overwhelmed

12th grade students in Sulaymaniyah demand ease in workload

SULAYMANIYAH, January 29 — Twelfth-grade students have appealed to the Ministry of Education for a reduction in their academic syllabus, citing concerns about excessive workload and stress.

A student, voicing the collective anxiety, said, “Some subjects are so pressure-laden, we feel overwhelmed.”

Representing the students, Ayoub Ahmed spoke to 964media, urging, “We request a reduction in our program and seek clarity on this year’s curriculum from the education ministry.”

In addition, the students’ spokesperson has called for more university course slots to improve admission prospects.

Ahmed highlighted the disruption caused by a two-month school boycott, leading to significant delays in some subjects and a hurried pace in others.

Nazhad Abdullah, Sulaymaniyah’s deputy director of education, told 964media that the students’ plea had not reached their office yet.

Abdullah stated that decisions regarding curriculum reduction and procedural mechanisms fall under the purview of the education ministry, which will make the final call.
