Winter demand strains national power supply in Sulaymaniyah
SULAYMANIYAH, January 29 — The Sulaymaniyah electricity directorate has issued a warning that national power supply may drop if the cold weather intensifies.
Sulaymaniyah receives approximately 800 MW of electricity from the national grid during the winter, whereas the demand is nearly 2,000 MW to maintain a 12-hour supply.
The directorate’s spokesperson, Sirwan Mohammed, told 964media that demand for electricity increases as temperatures drop, leading to reduced supply.
“Residents use electricity for heating, which creates a problem due to the excessive consumption of power,” he said.
With over 520,000 electricity customers, Sulaymaniyah faces a challenge in meeting rising demand.
The shortfall in national electricity supply has led to an increase in reliance on private generators, potentially leading to higher monthly costs for consumers.
Mohammed emphasized the need for fundamental solutions, stating, “Electricity supply and management require fundamental solutions, and it is imperative for the Kurdistan Regional Government to address this issue comprehensively.”
