Drowning fears persist

KRG to bring 11 home from Libya as search continues for 10 missing from Raparin

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government says it has completed arrangements to bring 11 citizens home from Libya in the coming days, while it keeps searching for 10 people from the Raparin administration who are missing there.

The KRG’s Interior Ministry and Department of Foreign Relations began work after reports that several young people from the Region had disappeared in Libya, the government said, and the return is being coordinated with Iraq’s embassy and KRG representatives. The same effort continues for the 10 from Raparin “until their fate is determined.”

Families lost contact in early August with a group of migrants from the Region who were later reported to have left Libya by boat for Italy. Reports of a possible drowning emerged in late September, but no deaths have been officially confirmed. DNA samples were taken on Sunday from relatives of 16 missing migrants, 12 from Raparin, three from Chamchamal and one from Dukan, to compare with unidentified bodies recovered in Libya.
