Three drones hit Iranian Kurdish opposition camp in Koya

ERBIL — Three drones struck Azadi Camp in Koya district between 1:40 and 2:10 a.m. on Monday, hitting a site associated with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Region Security Agency said. Nobody was hurt.

The agency gave no details of damage and did not say where the drones came from, and the party had not commented. The camp has been in Koya for more than 25 years and houses displaced Iranian Kurds and the families of the party’s Peshmerga.

It is the third strike on an Iranian Kurdish opposition site in the Region this month and the first on the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. Three drones hit a Komala camp in Surdash on Sept. 7, setting houses on fire, in an attack Komala blamed on Iran, and three more struck a Komala site in Zargwezalla on Sept. 15 while two others came down elsewhere in Sulaymaniyah and Halabja. Iran fired seven missiles and several drones at the party’s base in Azadi Camp on March 6, wounding a fighter, and the camp was hit again in April. In late July six drones struck Koya and Sharbazher within 24 hours.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told his Iraqi counterpart in New York last week that regional states should not let their territory be used against Iran, and both sides stressed implementing their border security agreements, including a 2023 deal committing Iraq to stop Iranian Kurdish groups using its territory.
