Aligned with PM Al-Sudani

New ‘Reconstruction and Development’ bloc formed in Iraqi parliament

BAGHDAD — A new parliamentary bloc aligned with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani was announced Saturday, bringing together 52 members of Iraq’s legislature under the banner of “Reconstruction and Development.”

Unveiled during a press conference in Baghdad, the bloc said it aims to prioritize legislative reform and government oversight, positioning itself as a vehicle to support reconstruction efforts and reinforce political stability.

In its founding statement, the bloc pledged to move beyond narrow political affiliations and focus on national development goals. “Reconstruction is not just a technical term or electoral slogan,” the statement read. “It is a sovereign national act that restores dignity to citizens, vitality to cities, and authority to institutions.”

Members said they would back the government’s efforts when aligned with constitutional and national priorities, but also promised accountability when those lines are crossed. “We will support the government’s reform steps when they are consistent with the constitution and national interest, and we will hold it accountable when it strays from that path,” the bloc said.

It also emphasized anti-corruption efforts, protection of public funds, and legislative initiatives to promote economic growth and stability ahead of Iraq’s next parliamentary elections, scheduled for Nov. 11, 2025. Al-Sudani has signaled his intent to seek a second term.
