Presidential decree
Kurdistan Region establishes three new sub-districts in Duhok Governorate’s Simele district
ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has issued a decree establishing three new administrative sub-districts within Duhok Governorate: Sharya, Miserik, and Tanahi. The order, issued on Wednesday, aims to enhance public services and administrative support for residents in these areas, according to an official statement.
In the official decree, President Barzani highlighted that the decision complies with the laws of the Kurdistan Region and follows recommendations from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Council of Ministers. The new sub-districts were created in alignment with regional governance laws and with the goal of improving local administration. The decree mandates that implementation will begin immediately.
All three new sub-districts are close to the city of Duhok and are part of the Simele district, with now Tanahi connected to the Duhok City’s western flank after urban expansion.
Miserik is close to the town of Simele, itself a short drive from the Duhok City.
Sharya is predominantly home to Yazidi families.
Administratively, Duhok Governorate is divided into several districts and sub-districts, each overseen by local councils that report to the central governorate administration.
The capital, Duhok City, serves as the primary administrative centre, hosting the governor’s office and the main government institutions that manage local governance and public services.
The governorate is structured into districts, including Duhok, Simele, Zakho, Amedi, and – administratively – Akre, which are further divided into sub-districts to ensure localised administration and service delivery.
Each district has its own administrative council responsible for managing local affairs, coordinating public services, and implementing policies aligned with both the Kurdistan Regional Government’s and the Iraqi central government’s directives.
