Mayor cites tons of garbage

Locals in Altun Kupri blame students for trash collection challenges

ALTUN KUPRI, January 23 — Municipal authorities in Altun Kupri have voiced concerns over what they call improper garbage disposal by students from Al-Kitab University, posing challenges for local cleaners.

Approximately 20 houses in the district’s Qarabag neighborhood house university students, predominantly from central and southern Iraq.

Mohammed Najib, the mayor of Altun Kupri, claimed that students residing in the neighborhood have caused difficulties by not adhering to local rules. He noted, “They randomly throw their garbage in the streets and beneath house walls on a daily basis.”

According to Najib, the municipality collects garbage twice a week, removing close to two tons of waste, largely attributed to the students.

Expressing frustration, Najib suggested, “It would be preferable for the university administration to allocate an alternative location for the students.”

The university’s administration did not respond to multiple 964media requests for comment.
