Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani received today the head and members of the international evaluation team responsible for combating money laundering and terrorism financing. During the meeting, they reviewed Iraq’s efforts in the areas of combating money laundering, the performance of government and security agencies involved in pursuing terrorism, and the drying up of its funding sources.
Al-Sudani assured the international delegation that combating terrorism financing and money laundering is a top priority within their executive program, approved by the Council of Representatives. This was reflected in the approval of the fifth annual report on combating money laundering and terrorism financing by the current government during a previous session of the Council of Ministers. He emphasized the importance of international and friendly countries’ cooperation with Iraq in fighting money laundering and extraditing wanted individuals. Iraq has fought terrorism on behalf of the world and now faces the challenge of dormant terrorist cells and extremist ideologies advocating violence, making it imperative for everyone to collaborate in depriving these entities of all sources of funding.
The international evaluation team commended Iraq’s efforts in this field, their success in recovering stolen funds, and their relentless efforts in eliminating ISIS and eradicating its remaining cells. The team also acknowledged Iraq’s efforts in countering networks that promote terrorism-supporting ideologies.
