Century-old bazaar in Tuz Khurmatu nearly deserted as shopkeepers grapple with potential collapse
TUZ KHURMATU, January 11– Shopkeepers in Tuz Khurmatu’s bazaar are closing down their businesses, leaving the once bustling area now deserted. Fearing a potential collapse of the historic structure that housed over 100 shops less than 15 businesses are still open today.
Officials suggested shopkeepers take on the reconstruction. with each business responsible for its own repairs. The announcement sparked controversy in the town and among shopkeepers as citizens are prohibited from modifying historic monuments, including the bazaar.
Built in 1918, the century-old bazaar has never undergone restoration.
