Casas downplays Iraqi team’s chances in upcoming Asian Cup

BAGHDAD, January 3 — The Iraqi men’s national football team has slim chances of winning at the upcoming Asian Cup, according to manager Jesús Casas.

In a statement to Qatari newspaper Al-Sharq, the Spanish former footballer said, “I am not a foolish coach to promise Iraqis impossible things that cannot be achieved in reality.” He did emphasize his commitment to making the fans proud though by putting in every effort.

He added, “There are teams stronger than Iraq expected to win the next Asian Cup, such as Japan, Korea, and Iran.”

Qatar is set to host the Asian Cup, scheduled to kick off on January 12.
