School tree-planting campaign increases greenery amid prolonged closures

SULAYMANIYAH, January 2 — An environmental organization has initiated a tree-planting initiative at a school in one Sulaymaniyah sub-district amid the on-going closure of classrooms.

The Tama Organization for Education and Culture, a non-governmental organization, has planted 80 Arizona cypress and olive trees at Bngird Primary School, with plans to extend the campaign to schools across the sub-district. Bngird has more than 10 primary and secondary schools.

Public schools in Sulaymaniyah and Halabja governorates have been closed for more than 100 days as teachers and administrators wage a boycott over delayed salaries from the government.

Zhilwan Abdulrahman, the head of plans and projects at Tama Organization, informed 964 that the campaign aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of schools and increase green spaces.
