President Rashid meets UN’s top diplomat in Iraq
BAGHDAD, July 24 — President Abdul Latif Rashid met with the United Nations’ top diplomat in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, in Baghdad on Monday to discuss the country’s political situation, issues of displacement, and efforts to combat climate change.
A readout from the President’s office stated:
“The President of the Republic received the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq.
His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today, Monday, July 24, 2023, at the Baghdad Palace, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Plasschaert.
During the meeting, the President spoke about the overall political situation in Iraq, the role of the United Nations and the efforts made in the case of the displaced [population], as well as climate change.
In light of this, the work of the United Nations and its associated organizations in supporting Iraq and revitalizing its role was discussed, especially in projects adopted by the United Nations, and the humanitarian cases represented in resolving the file of the displaced and facilitating their return to their areas of residence.
For her part, Plasschaert affirmed the UN’s keenness to do everything possible and help Iraqis in various fields.”
