Suspected drone drops explosive on agricultural field in Diyala, killing three
DIYALA — An unidentified drone dropped an explosive device over an agricultural field in Muqdadiyah district on Sunday, killing three and wounding two others, local police said.
Brig. Gen. Haitham al-Shammari, spokesperson for Diyala police, told 964media that security forces arrived after hearing a loud explosion at midday to find that a drone had dropped a device that “detonated directly upon impact with the ground.” Five people were near the site at the time. The bodies and wounded were transferred to Muqdadiyah General Hospital. An investigation is underway and the party responsible remains unknown.
The attack adds to a series of drone incidents across Iraq since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday. Iraqi defenses have intercepted multiple drones targeting military sites in Dhi Qar and Basra, and airstrikes previously hit Jurf al-Nasr in Babil. Iraq has extended its airspace closure as authorities continue to assess the security situation.
