Sudani warns of ‘dangerous turning point’ as he meets British ambassador

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani warned Saturday that the region is facing a “dangerous turning point” and called for an immediate return to dialogue, during a meeting with British Ambassador to Iraq Irfan Siddiq.

Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s rejection of the continuation and expansion of the war, calling for “prioritizing dialogue and returning to the negotiating table to ensure responsible engagement, away from the use of excessive force and actions that endanger regional security.”

The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on multiple targets inside Iran in the early hours of Saturday, hitting sites in Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah. Iran responded with missiles and drones targeting U.S. military bases and allied facilities across the Middle East, including in Gulf states and Iraq, as well as toward Israel. Several projectiles were intercepted by air defense systems. Iraq has closed its airspace, as have multiple countries across the region.
