Foreign Minister Hussein meets Hakim to discuss government formation
BAGHDAD — Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Hikma Movement leader Ammar al-Hakim in Baghdad to discuss ongoing efforts to form the government and regional developments, the Foreign Ministry said.
The two sides “discussed developments in the government formation process and political movement,” amid continued negotiations among political blocs.
The meeting “also addressed developments in the regional situation and the current challenges,” with both parties emphasizing “the importance of prioritizing wisdom and dialogue to spare the region the risks of sliding into any potential conflict.”
Iraq’s government formation has stalled since the 2025 elections. Parliament must elect a president before a prime minister can be tasked, but the constitutional deadline has passed.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan have not agreed on a presidential candidate.
The Shiite Coordination Framework has nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. President Donald Trump has warned that Washington could halt support for Iraq if Maliki returns to office.
The Foreign Ministry earlier clarified that a verbal message delivered by U.S. officials in Washington included an “explicit and clear hint” of possible sanctions if the framework insists on Maliki.
