Mazloum Abdi meets France’s President Macron at Munich Conference

MUNICH — Syrian Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi said he met with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, discussing efforts toward a ceasefire in Syria.

In a post on X on Friday, Abdi said he “found his straightforward and personal commitment to efforts aimed at achieving a durable ceasefire and sustainable de-escalation in Syria.”

“We highly value this active role and commend France’s steadfast position in supporting stability and combating terrorism,” Abdi wrote. “We look forward to the continuation of France’s positive role at this pivotal stage, in support of our efforts and our people to safeguard the region and preserve stability across all Syria’s territory.”

The meeting followed Abdi’s talks Thursday with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, where the three discussed progress on implementing the integration agreement between Damascus and the SDF.

Abdi thanked the United States for “its role in facilitating this agreement and supporting its implementation” and for diplomatic efforts that enabled his delegation to participate in the conference “as representatives of the Syrian state within its unified national framework.”
