Iraq condemns drone attack on UN base in Sudan that killed Bangladeshi peacekeepers
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday condemned a drone attack on a United Nations logistical support base in the Sudanese city of Kadugli that killed and wounded Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving with a UN mission.
In a statement, the ministry said it “expresses its strongest condemnation of the terrorist attack that targeted the United Nations logistical support base in the city of Kadugli in the brotherly Republic of Sudan, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of a number of Bangladeshi soldiers serving as part of the United Nations mission.”
The strike hit the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei logistics base in Kadugli in Sudan’s South Kordofan region on Dec. 13, killing six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and wounding eight others, the United Nations said. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack as “unjustifiable” and said it could constitute a war crime under international law.
Sudan’s military blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for the attack.
