Al-Halbousi, Amiri meet in Baghdad to discuss government formation

BAGHDAD — Badr Organization Secretary General Hadi Al-Amiri received Taqaddum Party leader Mohammed Al-Halbousi on Saturday in Baghdad to discuss developments related to forming Iraq’s next government.

Iraq held its sixth parliamentary election since 2003 on Nov. 11, 2025, electing 329 members of the Council of Representatives. The Independent High Electoral Commission reported turnout of 56.11%, higher than in the 2021 vote.

According to a statement from Al-Amiri’s media office, the meeting involved a review of “the ongoing consultations and exchanged views among political forces regarding the formation of the new government and the continuation of fulfilling constitutional obligations.”

The statement added that the two sides “stressed the importance of unifying efforts and enhancing joint action in a way that contributes to supporting the stability of the political process and meeting the aspirations of citizens.”

Official results show the Reconstruction and Development Coalition led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani won 46 seats, but no party or coalition secured a majority. Forming a government will require alliances and compromises among several blocs.
