Maliki, Araji discuss Iraq’s post-election political landscape
BAGHDAD — National Security Adviser Qasim Al-Araji met on Saturday with State of Law Coalition leader Nouri Al-Maliki to discuss recent political developments in Iraq, according to a statement from Al-Araji’s media office.
The meeting addressed the outcomes of the parliamentary elections, with both sides emphasizing the importance of using the results to achieve “political balance” and strengthen “the democratic system.”
The statement said the two officials also discussed “the need to sustain the momentum of security efforts to preserve the achieved gains.”
Iraq held its sixth parliamentary election on November 11, 2025, to choose the 329 members of the Council of Representatives, the body that elects the president and approves the federal government.
Voter turnout was approximately 56 % nationwide, using the official figures released by the Independent High Electoral Commission. Turnout was higher than in 2021, when participation was about 43 %.
No single party won a majority, reflecting a fragmented outcome requiring post‑election coalition building. The Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al‑Sudani, emerged first with around 46 seats in parliament.
